Foreigners can get married in Italy, however, there are two  documents you will need in order for your marriage to be legally binding. 

The easiest choise is to have a simbolic, beautiful and emotional ceremony.

Italy recognizes both religious and civil wedding ceremonies. For non-catholic religious weddings, a civil ceremony needs to be incorporated in order to make the marriage legal. If you’re interested in legally getting married in Italy, then you can find more information by contacting your embassy. 

In the case you you’re feeling overwhelmed with the steps, then you can always get married in your home country and have a symbolic ceremony in Rome. We love this idea because you both can still exchange vows and have an intimate ceremony, while not having to worry about the legality of things somewhere foreign to you. 

I can add that if you wanna do a civil wedding and not simbolic you can not do that every location you have in your mind but it has to be a ‘casa comunale’.

Some Venue are ‘casa comunale’ but mostly public lands are not casa comunale so in that case you only have a simbolic ceremony.

It is a perfect venue for a luxury wedding on Lake of Como.

The monumental staircase of 135 steps was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725

My personal suggestion is to plan you ceremony during the morning because in the afternoon the park of villa borghese is full of tourists and people going around by bike.
The Tempietto di Diana, which is the most famous spot for an elopement ceremony in Villa Borghese, is covered so it can be a very good plan B on a public land in case of rain.

CASTEL SANT’ANGELO

Giardini degli Aranci

The garden, whose name derives from the characteristic presence of many bitter orange trees, extends in the area of the ancient fortress erected by the Savelli family between 1285 and 1287.
I could probably suggest you to think of the gardens for a easy walk during your elopement day.
The gardens are in the city center so they are surrounded by the ruins of Roman Empire but still enriched by beautiful orange trees and flowers all over the park.
What a lovely atmosphere for a romantic walk hand by hand!

The area was designed in the thirties of the twentieth century for the construction of the headquarters of the Universal Exhibition of Rome. It houses some examples of monumental architecture, which coexist with modern buildings built in the following decades.
The EUR area is located 20 minutes by car or taxi from the city center.
It is a really fascinating part to see because it represents a different shade of Rome.
There are white and 70’s style buildings all around and the arches of the buildings are covered, perfect also in case of rain.

After choosing a place for the ceremony and book a table in a restaurant you can consider to rent a vintage car or a Vespa to enjoy a ride around the city center.

BUROCRAZY TO ELOPE IN ROME

Concerning the burocracy part, foreigners are not required to have legal residency for a wedding in Italy. All you need is the appropriate paperwork including your passport, birth certificate, an affidavit, and two witnesses. If you’re planning to elope in Italy, then you’ll also need to submit a declaration of intent to marry.
You need to move at least 6 months before if you want to do a civil ceremony legally recognized in Italy.

Rome has a continental climate (warm winters and hot summers).
It is perfect along all the year. You can consider Rome even for an elopement during January or February. In this period, you can find great Temperatures and sunny days and for sure less tourists.

SPRING IN ROME

The best time to elope in Rome is spring because of the beautiful flowers you will find all around the streets and parks. But pay attention: Rome is one of the most touristic cities of all Europe so along the year is always crowded and full of people especially in the historical center.
In spring, the days are warm and you will find beautiful colors around the stunning gardens and parks of the city.

SUMMER IN ROME

For sure summer is the season in which italians but not only go on holiday so in June, July and September the city it’s crowded but also hot. Summer, temperatures are higher but the evenings are definitely warmer.

AUTUMN IN ROME

Autumn, you can find more rainy days and the city is very crowded because of some Italian festivities during October and September.

WINTER IN ROME

From November to March you will find a more relaxed atmosphere, still with a lot of people but with colder temperatures if you wake up earlier you can enjoy the city much better!
